This is Not a Love Poem by Caliope Gallagher

I don’t know how to write about love

Without writing about you

I don’t know how to write about love

Without writing about heartbreak first,

I don’t know how to write about love

So, I’m not. (I am not going to write about you)

Instead, I am going to write about the ocean

And the feeling of looking out into forever

Instead, I am going to write about going for a drive

And wanting the night to never end

I don’t know how to write about falling in love

But I imagine it is like looking at a sunset for the first time

I imagine falling in love is like standing at the top of a mountain

I imagine love is like driving with no destination in mind

I don’t know how to write about love

Because love is not perfect, love is messy,

Love is blue eyes and a crooked smile

Love is an open sky and a full take of gas
