Grief and Belief by Monica Barry

I never believed in you until now

I prayed over my meal,

As my grandma led evening grace

I went to church

Once every blue moon

I said my prayers

As I crawled into bed

I never believed in you until now

I recited Our Father

With the rosary clasped between my palms

I learned of the Gospels

With my pen furiously taking thorough notes

I learned of Jesus

And his journey to earth, heaven, earth

I never believed in you until now

My mom was sick

And suffered with each breath

My mom was unlucky

With her constant aches and pains

My mom was depressed

In her bed-ridden state

I never believed in you until now

She was beautiful,

Making the fight appear effortless

She was caring,

Making her daughter her entire reason to exist

She was strong,

Suppressing the pain with a warm smile

You

 Gifted me her

You

Helped me grieve

You

Gave me a guardian angel

for the rest of my life

I never believed in you until now
