Continuance by Katherine Metcalf

Sun beating down from above

Tips of fingers tingling

Splotches of red and white spread around my thighs

Flashbacks to a simpler time with love

Comfort and safety in the birds who sing

Eyes open, reality sets in with a released sigh

One foot in front of the other

Feet, calves, legs bear the weight of me

The heat squeezing and flattening my body

Find darkness in the surrounding trees to take cover

Missing the feeling of what I usually see

Emotions galore, physical exhaustion-now groggy

Face the beating of this nature of mother

Once again, one foot in front of the other
